What is Solar Eclipse (Ring of fire) 2020 |facts| up-comings| Myths.

solar eclipse

Solar Eclipse:  Solar Eclipse occurs when a portion of the earth is engulfed in a shadow cast by the moon which fully or partially blocks sunlight. This occurs when Sun, Moon and Earth are aligned.

The Moon's shadow is not big enough to engulf the entire planet. This area changes during the course of eclipse because the Moon and Earth are in constant motion.Earth continuously rotates around it's axis while, it orbits the sun and the moon orbits earth .this is why solar eclipse seem to travel from one place to another.

Types of Solar Eclipse:  There are four different types of solar eclipse:

                                        Types of solar eclipse

  1. Partial Solar Eclipse:  This type of eclipse is least impressive, but also the most common and a part of every type of Solar Eclipse. Occurs when the moon only partially obscures the sun's disk and casts only it's Penumbra on earth.                                                                                                                                                           During Partial solar eclipse, the moon appears to take a chunk out of the sun .A ''Smiley'' face crescent sun is on event in it own right, but at no point does the moon block all of the sun's light,so it never get completely dark.                It can deeply affecting event if the moon covers anything more than about 90% of the sun especially on clear day. However, that it is dangerous to observe. it is not possible to look at the sun unless you're wearing special solar safety glasses.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    partial solar eclipse
  2. Total Solar Eclipse:  This is best and happy accident of nature type Eclipse. Happen when the moon completely cover's the sun, and it can only take place when the moon is near perigee, the point of the moon's orbit closest to earth.  There are two attractions of a total solar eclipse. First is that for a few precious minutes, you can look at sun's corona without safety glasses.                                                                                                                      Second reason is to stand under the moon's shadow as it clear a blackout or at least a deep twilight all around you.                                                                                                                                                                               During any one eclipse, totally occurs at best only in a narrow track on the surface of earth. This narrow track is called the ''Path of Totality''.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   total solar eclipse
  3. Annual Solar Eclipse:  Like partial solar eclipse it is also dangerous. It take place when moon's disk is not big enough to cover the entire disk of the sun's outer edge remain visible to form a ring of fire in the sky. it happens when moon is at apogee, it furthest point from the earth in it slightly elliptical orbit, so the sun appear slightly bigger in the sky than moon.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 annual solar eclipse
  4.   Hybrid Solar Eclipse:  It is it bit of all three of the eclipse but most Total solar eclipse and Annual solar eclipse and also known as Annual/Total Eclipse. Depending on where you stand in the Eclipse track on the surface of earth it appear as a total solar eclipse , on other place it appear as an annual solar eclipse. these solar eclipse are very rare and happen about once every 10 year.

 Facts about Solar Eclipses:

  1. Depending on the geometry of sun, moon and earth, there can be between 2 & 5 solar Eclipse each year.
  2. Total solar eclipse are rare, happening only once every 18 months.
  3. The longest a total solar eclipse can be last in 7.5 minutes.
  4. The shadow created on the earth by the moon during a solar eclipse is broken down into three parts.
  5. The speed of the moon as it moves across the sun is approximately 2,250 km (1,398) per hour.
  6. Almost identical eclipse occur after 18 Year-11 days-known as the Saros Cycle.
  7. From either the north or south pole, only a partial solar eclipse is able to be viewed .
  8. The word Eclipse was used to describe this event as it the Greek word meaning abandonment or downfall.
  9. Usually the alignments of the sun, moon and earth coincide during new moon-syzygy.
  10. In some ancient and modern cultures, solar eclipse were attributed to supernatural causes or regarded as bad omens.

Myths on Eclipse:  The scientist in NASA list some popular myths and half truths related to Eclipse and provide some scientific correct explanations.

  1. Total solar eclipse produce harmful rays that can cause blindness: NASA explain that looking directly at sun is unsafe except during the brief total phase of a solar eclipse (totality). when the moon entirely block the sun's bright face, when will happen only within the narrow path of totality.                                                                                                                                          ''However, if you watched the sun before totality, you will catch glimpse of the brilliant solar system and this can cause retinal damage through the  typical human instinctual  response is to quickly look away before any severe damage  has actually occurred''.
  2. If you are pregnant you should not watch an Eclipse because it can harm your baby.  The NASA scientist explain that the radiations are harmless and would not affect the developing fetus. In earlier fact check,FIT had spoken to doctors as well who reiterated this. Dr Anuradha Kapur, head of obstetrics and Gynecology , at Max hospital, saket had aid that eclipse has no affect on pregnant women and food.                                                                                                                                                                     ''It's strong belief among pregnant woman. And i always advice them to meet the doctors. You don't have to stop eating and you need to protect our self  from  dehydration. If you feel weak, take rest and don't fall for such superstitions.
